After the general dumpster fire of a year that 2020 was, it almost seems strange and overly optimistic to say happy new year. Maybe we should soften it a little this time to “Have a better year” or maybe just “2020 is over. Let’s not do that again.” Anyway, as much of a pile of human shaped depression as I have been this past year, I still like to believe that the beginning of the year is a hopeful time and that we have an opportunity to do better.

As I’m writing this, it’s almost 11:00 my time. By the time I finish writing it, I’m sure it will be after midnight. Full disclosure: I’m spending this segment of of the holiday season with the traditional bottle of champagne but alone in front of my computer. I guess I’m a slave to tradition. I have not written on this site in far too long. I’ve been busy with other projects and trying to navigate the apocalypse like everyone else. But here’s the thing, Some idealistic part of me wakes up on New Years and gives me this crazy idea that we really could make the world a better place.

Now, to be clear, this is my 12/31-01/01 voice. By the time February hits, I’m solidly in seasonal depression land. So you might ask why the hell I’m even posting this. Good question. The best answer I have is this. I know that I am not alone. I know that there are others out there who feel that twinge of hope and then let go of it when things get tough.

If you’ve read this far, you probably know where I’m coming from. So, I guess I want to say something to you. If you’ve made it through my late-night New Years Eve ramblings, you are probably someone who has not lost hope, but don’t quite remember where you left it. Here’s what I want to tell you. Don’t let a single day pass you by. It doesn’t matter if it’s January first, December 31st or anywhere in between, Today is the start of the life you choose to build.

It doesn’t matter when you read this. I don’t care if it’s New Years Day or if you somehow stumbled on it in the middle of July. Today is an opportunity to create the life you want. Today is the foundation. Stop talking and build something on it.
